Vertical Forests
Italian architect Stefano Boeri has an incredibly intriguing idea to create green buildings in order to combat global warming! His idea must be one of the most interesting new developments in urban forestry. He is taking big steps to make a big impact on Earth and beyond! He designed what is called a “vertical forest” which aims to have architecture inhabited by trees in order to improve the environment and living conditions of people living in urban areas.
Nanjing Towers
Stefano Boeri started in Nanjing, China where there is well-known air pollution. His “Nanjing Towers” project is planned to be completed by 2018. The vertical forests will be the first ever in Asia! The goal is to grow over 1,000 trees and 2,500 shrubs. Each tower should produce about 132 pounds (60kg) of oxygen every day. Just look at them, they will definitely take your breath away! Boeri is suggesting that in fact all of China is covered with these forests and perhaps the entire Earth. There is a chance Earth will be uninhabitable due to rising sea levels in the future if the emission of CO2 in the atmosphere isn’t drastically reduced.

Stefano seems to just be starting in China. Two of his designs have been built in Milan and Switzerland! Seen below are two of his vertical forests in Milan called “Bosco Verticale.”

Stefano isn’t going to stop with planet Earth! He and his team “imagined that, by 2117, irreversible climate change would force humankind to establish a new habitat in space.” So, they are working on designs for vertical forest Mars colonies! How interesting, right?
