Weekend Bonds
We had an infinite to-do list on Saturday, which included cleaning, laundry, and going to Jonas’ soccer matches. Cheers filled the field, mingling with the aroma of new grass. “Go, Jonas, go!” We would shout, our voices mixing with those of other parents. We were happy even in these little victories, like a well-kicked ball. It made no difference if we won or lost. Our weekend routines, which anchored us together with common experiences and a developing affection for the life we were creating, were what counted.

Eva Becomes Teacher
Eva took on the responsibility of helping James with his studies despite her youth. She would grab out pencils and paper and say, “Let’s do math,” as James let out a dramatic groan. Why is knowing numbers necessary? He would complain. “So you can count how many ice creams you eat!” Eva would chuckle. She led him through each lesson with a combination of toughness and fun, and her patience never seemed to falter. I felt proud of her when I watched her teach because I could see how much she was developing.
