Born in 1928, the Howard dynasty’s leader began his career with a children’s touring theatrical group before sharing the stage with Henry Fonda in a Mr. Roberts play. He also starred on The Andy Griffith Show with Ron and Gentle Ben with his youngest son Clint.

The patriarch also had a long-lasting film career, with over 100 film credits to his name. And the family is evidently very supportive of one another, as some of those roles were in films directed by his eldest son. Rance appeared as a preacher in Apollo 13, and he also played Cardinal Beck in Angels and Demons. However, he did not limit his acting to Ron’s films. In the 2019 dramedy Apple Seed, the elder man played the on-screen father of his other son Clint.
