The first steps
Brendan, the coast guard in charge of the search, hesitated, his heart pounding as he felt the gaze of his comrades weighing down on him. He could not afford to disappoint. With cautious steps, he climbed into the blue boat, approaching the small upper windows, trying to catch a glimpse of something through the glass. Soon after, his companion John joined him, and together they tried to peek inside, but what they saw … was nothing like they expected.

The tiny windows, however, offered no useful visibility; through them, the view was completely obscured, as if the boat was plunged into endless night. No other option remained. “We have to open it,” Brendan said to John, determinedly. John nodded, and together they lifted the hatch on top of the ship, ready to face what lay beyond.
