Tom was determined to find out what was going on and became increasingly convinced that something was wrong. He couldn’t shake the sensation that Max’s death didn’t mark the conclusion of the story. The paw tracks, disturbed dirt, and nighttime barking were not simply coincidences. “It has to be connected,” Tom whispered, kicking a little rock on his way back to the home, his mind racing with questions.
