the faint barking
On the third night, just as his eyelids were closing, Tom heard a faint barking. The sound was obviously familiar. He quickly grabbed his torch and tiptoed outside. The night air felt chilly against his face, and the distant barking became slightly louder. “Max?” he said quietly, squeezing the flashlight harder. Step by step, he approached the source of the noise, his heart thumping in his chest.

This time, Tom responded to the barking with renewed determination. The moonlight made the yard appear almost surreal. He stepped slowly, trying not to make any noise. The barking drew him closer till he found himself standing at Max’s grave. The dirt appeared to have been disturbed. Tom’s breath caught as he carefully lowered the beam to get a better look at the ground.
