Sarah watched Tom push his cereal about in the bowl. He hadn’t said much since Max died. “Honey, are you okay?” she inquired, attempting to sound casual. Tom shrugged, not meeting her gaze. She exchanged glances with Mark. “He’s still so sad,” she said as Tom went upstairs. Mark nodded. “He’ll come around,” he continued, his voice not fully certain.

restless thoughts
Tom crawled into bed and pulled the blankets up to his chin. The events of the night were replayed in his thoughts. He could hear the barking, clear and familiar. Tom turned onto his side and pressed his eyes shut, attempting to will himself to sleep. His mind kept returning back. ‘Why am I hearing Max if he’s gone?’ he wondered. Finally, tiredness took control, and he fell into a fitful sleep.
