Like a Ghost
Elmer late recounted the events that went down on that particular day in November. He did not know it yet, but it would alter his life. He made it through the cold morning but felt invisible, almost like a ghost walking the streets of the city. “Can you spare any change?” he would ask people as they passed by. Every now and then, someone would give him a couple of coins from the depths of their jacket pockets.
Survival
He decided he needed to move on, so he started to walk to a different block. People passed by in a hurry, their faces wrapped in thick scarves and hands stuck firmly in their pockets. They must have been thinking about lunch and the workday ahead of them. Elmer could only wish he had the same problems they did, but no such luck. He was in survival mode, perpetually wondering where he would find his next meal. However, things changed when he spotted an object on the ground.
