I told Elaine about Karen’s most recent request. “She can’t just take over like that,” Elaine murmured, obviously unhappy for me. “I have a plan,” I said, sharing my secret thought. As I explained, we laughed like secret-keeping children. It was supposed to be uncomplicated and invisible. Elaine nodded sympathetically and said she would assist. Without Karen noticing, it was now all about execution.

I took Jake aside later that night. “Let’s make this memorable,” I responded with a wink. He caught the hint and smiled. We got in touch with the hotel and told them that we wanted to surprise Karen with this specific request. Elaine, in the meantime, discreetly collected Karen’s bags, making sure everything appeared to be in order. We were unable to leave any hints. Our hearts were pounding as we sneaked about, praying she wouldn’t find out what was going on. Everything had to proceed without a hitch.
