Escalating cruelty
At home, the stepmother’s brutality intensifies, becoming more vicious every day. She comes up with other ways to discipline the youngster, such as making him perform even more tasks or keeping him in dimly lit areas. Her verbal abuse gets more vicious as she tries to crush his soul. The youngster, who has no idea how terrible the day would grow, prepares himself for fresh suffering every morning.

The youngster tries to flee or seek assistance out of desperation, but each time he fails. When he attempts to smuggle letters to the considerate neighbor, the stepmother catches them. He even considers fleeing, but he is too terrified of getting caught and of the unknown. His sense of powerlessness and loneliness grows with each failed attempt, and the prospect of rescue becomes more and farther away every day.
