The youngster keeps coming up with little methods to get by, like drinking water from the faucet in the bathroom. He exhibits incredible resourcefulness and fortitude in spite of his fragile condition. In order to make each crumb last, he saves little portions of food wherever possible. He conceals his hopes and anxieties by whispering them into rumpled notebook paper sheets. Even in his lowest moments, these tiny acts of rebellion keep his spirit high.

Slip a note
The youngster is able to slip a message to the postal carrier one day while the stepmother is gone. He gets a boost of confidence when he sees the postal truck outside his window. On a scrap of paper, he quickly writes a request for assistance and folds it into a little piece. He pushes it through the slightly opening door, his heart racing. The youngster hopes it gets picked up, but the postal carrier doesn’t notice right away.
