Fear of speaking out
The youngster is so afraid that no one would believe him if he tells anybody about the assault. He has been persuaded by his stepmother that if he speaks up, things would only worsen. She assures him that he is alone and that no one is interested. The youngster absorbs what she says and withdraws more, believing that there is no chance for him. His existence is dominated by quiet and fear.

He begins recording all of the stepmom’s harsh acts in a covert diary. In the hopes that one day someone may believe his account, the child documents every detail of her cruel words and deeds. He pours his emotions onto the journal’s pages and conceals it in a place he believes she won’t discover. In the middle of the turmoil, writing provides him with a tiny sensation of control.
