Attempted intervention
A worried neighbor begins to see the boy’s growing dread and withdrawal. The boy’s sad, exhausted eyes and his tendency to recoil at unexpected sounds are noticed by this neighbor, an older woman with a good heart. She thinks that something is seriously off, but she is unaware of the entire scope of the issue. In an attempt to learn more, she chooses to keep a careful eye on everything.

Dad is deceived
The stepmother assures the father that everything is well when he calls to check up. She brushes off the neighbor’s worries, claiming that the boy’s reclusive conduct is only a result of adjustment issues. The father believes her reasons because he wants to think that his family is doing well. Still oblivious to the full scope of the stepmom’s brutality, he vows to speak with the youngster further when he gets back.
