Karen leaned in, her voice a near whisper. “We might need to do something big,” she said, her raised eyebrows hinting at the gravity of the situation. “Really? You think it’ll come to that?” I asked, struggling to keep the unease from my tone. She nodded, her expression resolute. Relief and anxiety wrestled within me as I tried to imagine what “big” could possibly mean.

Brenda’s Sudden Outburst
Out of nowhere, Brenda turned sharply to Jacob. “You little spoiled brat!” she snapped, her words cutting through the air like a slap. I watched as confusion clouded Jacob’s innocent eyes, and my heart sank. “Mommy?” he whimpered softly, clutching onto my leg for comfort. Her sudden outburst cast a heavy silence over the entire row, as if the room itself had forgotten how to breathe. I couldn’t fathom how anyone, let alone his own mother, could speak to a child that way. Instinctively, I pulled Jacob closer, shielding him from the weight of her words.
