Emily and Sarah froze, their expressions displaying horror. “You’re joking!” Emily almost knocked over her glass with a squeak. Sarah pressed, looking into my eyes for a glimmer of humor, “Tell me you’re pulling our legs.” It was evident how excited they were. It was just the kind of response I had anticipated. This mostly supported my suspicions, but as the lunch went on, the real fun was only getting started.

“To be honest,” I groaned, “I’m not sure what to do with all of this.” I pretended to be overwhelmed as I waved my hands over the fictitious mound of cash. I arched my eyebrows at them and gently made the remark, “A fortune like this is a blessing, but it’s…a lot to manage.” Sarah and Emily were excited to give me their counsel, and it was difficult not to smile.
