Family Meeting Time
I decided to take it a step further and organized a small family gathering to talk about ‘financial literacy.’ If the meal was illuminating, this was going to be instructive. ‘Let’s talk about investing and budgets,’ I said nonchalantly as they got settled. Important thing, huh? James, my kid, nodded, playing along but a little puzzled. Dollar signs were virtually whirling in Sarah’s and Emily’s eyes as they glanced at one another. It was the ideal time to learn more.

I began offering some advice, fairly basic stuff, but their focus veered off course like leaves in the wind. ‘Investment opportunity,’ Sarah said, their eyes sparkling as if they were in a casino. “So, how much can we expect on returns?” Emily said. She paid less attention to the real lesson and more attention to the cash signs. Every time I tried to give them a budget suggestion, their eyes were elsewhere, focused on how they might share in the success.
