A New Reality
The lawyer’s understanding improved as he read more. Still, everything seemed unreal, like something from a faraway dream. Even when his father passed away, I never thought he would have such an influence. There was a look on my ex’s face that I had never seen before. It resembled an emotional tempest. I had a gut feeling that everyone in the room would find whatever happened next to be too much to bear.

I made an effort to concentrate on the meaning of each passage as the reading progressed. Although it was difficult to understand, I had a hunch that this was only the beginning. Like me, everyone in the room was unable to move from their chairs as they processed the surprise. My ex’s departure from me marked a new chapter for all parties, and I watched him with the knowledge that this was probably not what he had anticipated.
