Brushing it off
John was worried about Max’s actions, but Emily dismissed it as love. She scratched Max behind the ears and added dismissively, “He’s just being protective.” But as the weeks went by, Max’s growing uneasiness became too much for Emily to ignore. John’s concerns appeared less implausible. John partly joked, “Perhaps he senses something we don’t.” “Does a dog have a sixth sense?” Nevertheless, Emily made an effort to keep things regular in the absence of any clear danger.

John made the decision to closely monitor Emily and Max. As Emily went about her everyday activities, John kept a tight eye on Max’s actions. Max never seemed to be able to unwind; he was always on guard and sniffing around the home more than normal. John started to question whether someone or something was hiding somewhere that he couldn’t see. Every day Max’s protectiveness showed no signs of abating, and his uneasiness only increased.
