Standing guard
Max was watching over their bedroom door as Emily woke up. He was rigid, his ears perked up, and he was looking straight ahead into the corridor. “Max, what’s out there?” Emily inquired in an attempt to calm him. Max remained still. Like a soldier on duty, he remained grounded and alert. They looked at each other anxiously as John joined her near the door. The anxiety increased as it became evident that Max felt something they couldn’t see.

John checked the security system, wondering if they were being stalked. After watching the tape for hours, he didn’t see anything out of the ordinary. He speculated, “Perhaps it’s just an animal outside.” Max’s actions, however, remained unchanged. John and Emily were restless and tense due to the unsettling growls and barks that filled the nights. John was even more keen to learn what had set off Max’s protective tendencies since there were no answers.
