8. Floyd Had Problems Standing
Howard McNear, who played town barber Floyd Lawson, suffered a devastating, debilitating stroke during the show’s third season. McNear’s future was uncertain because he couldn’t speak or stand properly. As a result, producers devised a unique stool that gave the actor the appearance of standing, allowing him to continue in his role until 1967.
9. Don Knotts Received Bullets In The Mail
One of the series’ most memorable gags concerned Barney Fife’s inability to correctly handle a rifle. The deputy had to make do with a single bullet instead of a fully-loaded pistol. So Knotts’ admirers would express their gratitude in an unusual way: by sending the actor bullets in the mail.
