Despite persistent knocks on the door and constant phone calls from the media, Erika and Mark remained firm in their decision not to speak to anyone. Following the police’s instructions to the letter, they refused all interviews and any contact with journalists. “We can’t say anything,” Mark reminded them calmly, watching Erika peek through the curtains, where a reporter was waiting with a microphone in hand. Erika nodded, torn between relief at doing the right thing and frustration at not being able to defend herself or clarify anything. The enforced silence protected them… but it also suffocated them.
