The shock of his life
“The shock of his life” was always an expression Jack thought was silly. If one planned well and was vigilant, one would not experience “shocks” to the system, which life was full of surprises. Now he had to gloomily denounce his naivety. If this hadn’t been the shock in his life, he wouldn’t exist. Jack would disagree with any farmer who claimed that he couldn’t see anything out of the ordinary when he looked at his cornfield.

But what if the eggs were something else? This unsettling idea began to roll around in Jack’s mind. He leaned down to examine the eggs more closely, but Mary, who was walking behind him, interrupted him. “Eggs?” Mary said. “Who are these eggs from?” She held the tom Jack found under the tractor. Jack dropped to his knees. As he put his head closer to the bright white eggs, his face froze in shock.
