I nodded slowly, stunned by the request and the consequences of taking on a child with no experience or connections. The thought of becoming a parent all at once daunted me greatly. “Jenna, this is a big commitment,” I said in a shaky voice. She nodded, realizing what her question meant. “I know it’s a lot,” she said softly, “but I trust you. Emily needs someone to like her and look after her.”

Jenna revealed that she had talked to Emily about me, making the request even more personal and heartbreaking. “She knows about you,” Jenna said, smiling sadly. “I told her stories, showed her photos. She already senses that she knows you.” Emily already had a picture of me in her head, which made my heart ache. It was obvious to what extent Jenna had hoped that.
