Jenna welcomed me inside, but I insisted that she rest while I was with Emily. I also helped Jenna inside the house to get her out. “You need a break, Jenna,” I said firmly. “I’ll take care of everything.” Jenna hesitated, but eventually nodded, showing her exhaustion. “Thank you so much,” she whispered, settling down on the sofa. I turned to Emily, who was watching us with wide eyes. “Let’s do something fun,” I suggested.

I prepared my lunch, cleaned and did laundry, and made an effort to help Jenna both physically and emotionally come to terms with her illness. Emily followed me around and talked about her favorite toys and games. She said, “You’re really good at this.” She watched me as I folded the laundry. I smiled, feeling like I was accomplishing something. “Thank you so much, Emily. I just want to help,” I said. I felt a growing bond with this little family throughout the day.
