Looking Into Surrogacy
At that point, adoption became out of the question, so they decided to look into another option: surrogacy. Nicole and Kevin started doing their homework and reading up on the process. When they found out it cost $75,000, they were disappointed since it apparently was even more expensive than adoption. However, they remained hopeful and started brainstorming for anyone who they knew and might do it for free. Nicole said, “We had heard stories that sisters carried and mothers carried, but I don’t have a sister, and my mother is over the age.”
Surprising New York Surrogacy Laws
Nicole and Kevin were surprised to find out about New York’s state laws regarding surrogacy. They did not expect hiring a surrogate in the state would be illegal. They could pay someone who lived outside the state, but this also posed another problem since traveling to and from the hospital would be costlier. Needless to say, the ideal arrangement would be having a surrogate that lived close by.
