This is why so many cruise ship employees live double lives when they’re on board. It’s not uncommon for certain couples to arrive at sea with spouses at home and a completely different relationship. Being shut off from the rest of the world allows you to be yourself, rather than the person you feel obligated to be on land.

Forget about watching your favorite TV shows. Working on a cruise ship makes it difficult to keep up with the news in general. As much as it hurts not to be able to watch your favorite team knock it out of the park next season, it’s sometimes impossible. At sea, internet access is notoriously pricey and inconsistent. When you dock, you often have to catch up, leaving days between when you get your news and when you don’t. As a result, many cruise personnel has stopped paying attention to the news, sports, and pop culture.
