Ian Holm appears in this photograph at the London premiere of “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.” Holm, the acclaimed British actor whose career spanned decades and included appearances in “Chariots of Fire” and “The Lord of the Rings,” died Friday, his agent confirmed. He was 88 years old. Holm died peacefully in the hospital, surrounded by his family and caregiver, according to his agent, Alex Irwin. His illness was caused by Parkinson’s disease.
