The women had no choice but to follow the instructions and return home. One by one, they received confirmation that their husband reached the war zone safe and sound. Peggy did not get one of those, however. The final goodbye was the last time that she knew anything about Billie. The only thing that she could hold onto was the idea that they might reunite in the future. She did not hear anything about her husband for the rest of the war! The whereabouts of Lt. Billie Harris remained unknown to his wife. He was eventually lost to time with the bureaucratic disorganization of the U.S. Army in those days.

Of course, she was worried the whole time. Peggy tried hard to get any information about Billie. It was hard to believe that he would not write her a single letter. There was no reason for him to stop writing to her since they had written to each other from the very start. Sadly, the military was a total mess back then. In France, the Supreme Headquarters sent her a message to inform her that Billie was on the way home. Much to her dismay, this turned out to be untrue. Peggy received a string of false information about him, which made her wonder if she would ever hear from her husband ever again.
