The System Did Not Work
Peggy would not learn the truth for the longest time. The first telegram that she received said that her husband went missing. It was dated July 7th. She fell apart after hearing this but had no choice but to pull herself together. Knowing that something was not quite right, she was determined to get to the bottom of things herself. She kept rereading this telegram and figured out what was so wrong about this. You see, she had gotten handwritten letters from her husband dated after the telegram. It must have meant that he was alive and well. Peggy went to the telegraph office to clear this up when she got a message saying that the date was just wrong. He actually went missing in action ten days later, on the 17th.

Her gut still told her that something was up. She tried to look for every single piece of information that she could get. Peggy deeply wanted to think that he was stateside in some hospital. Even his parents did not lose hope that he would return. Perhaps he was still being processed. They were also believed that he had suffered some memory loss, which is why he had yet to return home. At any rate, it was clear that something went wrong along the way. Her instinct told her not to give up on him just yet.
