The sad announcement
“I need to tell you something,” Jack said on his return to the house. “There’s no easy way to do this.” As Jack explained what had happened to the chickens, Bonnie’s face quickly dropped and became even paler. The morning had been peaceful a few hours ago, but now the situation had changed for Jack and his family. Jack had an eerie feeling that things were far from over, although the chickens’ demise cast a dark shadow over the day.

The pigs
The tears were in Bonnie’s eyes when Jack told her about the chickens. They kept the terrible news a secret, of course. But while he had been tending the pigs, more strange things began to happen. The usually cheerful and noisy pigs were silent while Jack fed them. When he heard that eerie wailing again, the hairs on the back of his neck stood on end as he watched them eat. It went on, uninterrupted.
