Black paint or ‘Boot-Topping’?
For military personnel, there is no difference between boot-topping and boot paint. If you don’t know what boot-topping is, it’s the black coating that they lather on their boots between the waterline and the deck. It’s made of sulfur or lime and has a kind of thick, liquid consistency. People who have not been to the military would not see the difference between boot-topping and black paint, but an expert military eye can easily spot it.
