William Shakespeare

A lot of people argue about what William Shakespeare looked like, but most agree that the Martin Droeshout engraving was the most accurate. The Bard sported facial hair despite a receding hairline. Professor Hildegard Hammerschmidt-Hummel found a death mask believed to be his in 1975. In the 19th century, they made death masks by pouring wax or plaster over the face of the deceased.

In 2010, Dr. Caroline Wilkinson of Dundee University used that death mask to create a rendering of his face. She used 3D imaging to map out his facial features. This rendering was the end result. Most agree that it looks like many of the interpretations! Shakespeare died on April 23, 1616 at 52 years old.
